Jules talks about his busted flipper, avoiding a Taco Bell fueled weight explosion and the unimpressive go-carting footage in his latest video offering. Interview by Ronnie Blakey

How is your cankle?
It never really turned into a cankle. I was straight onto the ice and keeping it under control so it didn’t get a chance to blow out.

What was the docs diagnosis?
A Grade 2 sprain of the AFTL (I think). No breaks, no tears but six weeks of rehab. But the doc reckons I’ll be right for the Quiksilver Pro in five weeks.

What’s the treatment?
Two hours of physio everyday bar the weekends for the duration of the injury and a check up with the doc in two weeks.
How long will you be out of action?
If I work on it and keep on it hopefully I can get back in the water after a month and fingers crossed be 100 percent for the Snapper.

You’re not famous for your strict training regime, if you’re not surfing can we expect you to blow out a little?
I’ve often wondered what I’d look like as a porker but this year I’m ready to get serious about keeping fit. So I guess this will be a good test. It’s hard right now because I’m not very mobile so I’ll have to go easy on the Haagen Dazs.

How will you beat the bulge?
It’s tough in the States. All the food is so good so I’ll be trying to eat as healthy as possible. I’m keen to get in the gym asap but most of my training right now involves an Xbox.

How’s the movie coming along?
Awseome. I spent the day with Matt Beauchesne yesterday to go over a bunch of footage and ideas, so that got me all pumped up to get back in action. I gave myself 12 months to film and I’m sticking to it. Luckily I’ve been able to have some of my favourite surfers join me for trips and they were ripping so it’s gonna be cool.

Ready to confirm or deny that you have bagged a 720 alley oop on camera?
Got the 720 and now I’m going for a 1080. Nah, can’t say yay or nay… not ruling it out though.

That new preview from the vid was epic, we love seeing you surf junky waves. How much of that kind of gear will we see in the movie?
That’s good feedback. I love watching guys surf junky waves too. I’ll definitely through some good surfing average waves in there.

Can we suggest there’s no more Super Mario carting the final edit of the movie.
Haha! Those go carts in the last webisode are really gnarly to drive but it didn’t really translate in the footage, did it? It’s just a bit of a piss-take really, how could you take me seriously with that super slow mo intro all geared up and then jumping in a freakin go kart!
